Measurable results after 15 months Mother and Childcare project:

Healthcare:
� There have been 3 immunization rounds servicing more then 150 children and 40 pregnant women. They have had preventional medicines fot Tetanus, Polio, BCG and Measles.
� There have been 22 life-saving evacuations from the interior to the hospital in Manokwari by 4 wheel drive and Cessna plane. No one has died.
� There is an agreement with Santa Monica Hospital and the Dinas Kesehatan in Manokwari. They are fully cooperating with the SDSP projects, resulting in free medicines, free medical operations (6, including the girl Maria) and medical consult.
� Together with Santa Monica Hospital there is an HIV-AIDS program. The program educated mothers and girls in Senopi and the transmigration area’s in three different meetings.
� Numbers of the Dinas Kesehatan showed that during the presence of the SDSP in the interior three children have died. One because of the earthquake in Wausin (Asiti), one drowned and one because of malaria. So one child has died because of a curable disease(malaria). Hence the SDSP has decreased the percentage of child mortality significant in one year time by means of medicine supplies, supporting and facilitate nurses, immunizations and healthcare education.
� The mobile clinic team of the Dinas Kesehatan that came to visit the Senopi district for the first time in September 2009 has concluded that the general health of children in the Senopi district is surprisingly good compared to other districts in the interior.
� The SDSP has provided mosquito-nets for every pregnant mother in the Senopi district.
� The policlinic has been rebuilt and is servicing every morning except on Sundays. The clinic also opens in case of emergencies.
� Two nurses are being sponsored and supported to bring quality of healthcare to higher standards, amongst others by providing them access to training.
� The SDSP, as the only organization in the interior at the time, has been able to help three districts with medical supplies, tents, food and nurses immediately after the januari 2009 earthquake disaster. These districts are Myah, Kebar and Senopi.
� The SDSP has provided a microscope in order to be able to locally perform blood tests for malaria and other diseases. A lab-specialist will be present in Senopi in early 2010. The SDSP and the Bishopric will provide her with salary and housing.
� The SDSP has a Memorandum of Understanding with the protestant NGO Mikatepmos which provides health services in the Arfak mountains. The cooperation includes sharing information, sharing transport and communication means, sharing training programs and sharing experience. Also there will be a new water system built together in Kampung Arfak in Manokwari. Mikatepmos provides the MCK’s (Mandi, Cuci, Kakhus) and the SDSP will support the inhabitants with material for a water system.
� The SDSP has provided transport for other NGO’s and by that brought them into the interior. JASOIL is now operating in the village of Aprawi and members of the Red Cross Manokwari got to reach the Senopi district after the earthquakes in January by using the SDSP car.

Water:
� The SDSP has surveyed the Senopi district and made a proposal for a full scale water system in the Senopi District which has unfortunately been rejected by the Dutch NGO . At this moment water dwellings are being made in each village (2 per village) to service the people in their urgent needs for clean (drinking) water. A couple of bigger more sustainable projects are being developed in cooperation with a Singapore based clean water system provider.
� The SDSP made a working rainwater system for the policlinic in Senopi.
� The SDSP made use of septic tanks for sanitation solutions for the policlinic and guesthouse in Senopi. The idea of the septic tank has been picked up by villagers. The SDSP provided individuals from Senopi materials for making their own septic tanks on 4 occasions.

Education:
� The first and second class students of the SMP school in Senopi get English lessons twice a week.


Art
� The SDSP has sponsored the Mansinam artist Pieter Rumbruren. The SDSP provided funding for a traditional home on Mansinam island from which Pieter sells his art. Pieter sold wooden statues to 7 guests this year. He also sold statues to the YAT Losmen. The cooperation will continue.
� 12 women from Asiti and 20 from Senopi are working together to make Manik-Manik bracelets. The women are united in a separate cooperation. Half of the profits of selling these bracelets will go to the women’s cooperation. Further discussion will decide on what common purpose the money will be spent. The other half of the profits will go to the individual women who made the bracelets. So far 150 bracelets have been sold.
� Senopi Manik-Manik products are being sold in two shops in Manokwari
� 5 women from Arapi have been involved in making traditional carpets for the Senopi guesthouse. They earned 1.500.000 Rupiah.
� A dance group in Senopi has performed for tourists on two occasions.
� The SDSP is providing support for Papuan students by selling their self-made paintings to tourists in the form of postcards. These postcards are being sold in a Manokwari bookstore for Rp. 5000 a piece. The SDSP pays this amount and in cooperation with the bookstore, sells the cards in the YAT losmen for Rp. 10.000 a piece to tourists. The profit being made (Rp. 5000 per card) is being used for project purposed. In this way both the Papuan students in Manokwari and the Mother and Childcare project in the interior is being supported.


Economics
� A chicken shed have been built. 20 chickens have been sold to the markets.
� A cow stable has been built and will be expanded in the next couple of months. At this moment the project contains 8 cows, but will be soon followed by others. A solution for the cow problem is to socialize the society on the matter. Support for cooperation of cow owners and by villagers who suffer from the free roaming cattle is in progress. The ultimate goal is that all cows are being detained within the fences of the SDSP cow project. At this moment the cow project provides two families with monthly salaries.
� A pig shed has been built. At this moment the SDSP owns 10 pigs. Two are pregnant. One of them is the high valuable Giant Australian Pig. Two families have monthly salaries related to them taking care of the pigs.. The pig stable will be increased until there are at least 30. Selling two pigs a month.
� Solar cells and generators have been purchased to provide electricity for the above mentioned projects. Also freezers to store pig- an cow meat have been brought to the interior.
� There has been made a traditional bamboo fence of at least 1.5 kilometer to protect crops from being eaten by cows and pigs. Approximately 50 people have made earnings in the process.
� There are three gardens. One servicing to grow foods for the cow- and pig- and chicken farms, one to grow foods to be sold on the markets in Manokwari and one for our own food. 7 women and two men from Arapi have monthly income from working in these gardens. In the past, 7 more men have worked in these gardens.
� Three men have monthly income by taking care of the cacao- and coffee gardens. The gardens are now ready for operation. The first cacao have been sold in august. The revenues are high enough to pay the salaries of these men. Therefore the Cacao garden is now financially independent. The coffee garden will sell the first crops before Christmas when the prices are the highest.
� There have been more than two hundred fifty people involved in building the projects infrastructure. They are/were all being reasonably paid. Porters for wood, sand, stones, landowners, builders, contractors, wood carpenters etc.
� SDSP has subsidized three shops, and countless individuals in the Senopi district with cheap transport to the city. Hence the SDSP has made a significant effort to strengthen the position of Senopi district products. Senopians do now have a fair chance on the Manokwari markets.
� The SDSP helped rebuild four churches in the districts of Kebar and Senopi after they have been damaged by the 2009 earthquakes.
� The SDSP helped advise the local population how to deal with big cooperations who want to make use of their land. In Senopi particularly it is still unclear who owns the land. Efforts have been made by the SDSP to solve this issue. This month there will be discussions to come to an overall agreement.
� The SDSP helped two cooperations in Arapi by setting up a chicken business and a peanut farm.
� The SDSP is stimulating local economy by buying as many products from the locals as possible. Goods from the locals are being bought with the ‘fair trade’ principle in mind. Resulting in more local activity in agriculture, fish farming, pig keeping and fence making. The SDSP has bought cacao from 8 families, cows from 3 families, peanuts from 4 families and pigs from 8 families. The SDSP is actively involved in socializing these families in working together and therefore share the costs of transport and facilitations.
� The SDSP is providing vegetable seeds for free if the locals do built a fence around their garden. Nowadays Senopi District has lots of varied vegetables.
� The SDSP is also setting up a cooperation in Chakwah, Myah district. The cooperation will sell products from Manokwari. Also Chakwah has been provided with vegetable seeds and garden materials.
� Two women in Assiti are being supported in their attempt to start a local shop. They save money by working in the gardens and the SDSP will help them with starting capital.


Transportation and logistics
� Negotiations with the AMA and the Bishop are still taking place concerning subsidized air traffic transportation. Especially in the monsoon season air traffic for the Senopi region is absolutely necessary. We hope a contract can be signed at the end of this year.
� Two cars are being managed by the SDSP.

Ecotourism
� The YAT losmen in Manokwari has been expanded with two extra rooms.
� The YAT losmen has an all Papuan staff
� The water supply system has seen a major overhaul
� The management of the YAT has been organized in a NGO which serves as a counterpart for the SDSP in Holland.
� The flow of money of the YAT has been made transparent
� The YAT is making profits from august 2009
� Some profits have been used as an investment in personnel and extension of the YAT
� All personnel are being paid by the income of the YAT en therefore the YAT is independent
� There have been 47 tourists staying in the YAT last year.
� We have frequently transported tourists with the two four wheel drives the SDSP purchased
� Project transports and logistics have been 35 times co-financed/sponsored by tourists who visited the project area
� The four wheel drives costs of repairs and salaries of the drivers can be paid of the income which the cars are generating. Next goal is to accumyulate enough money to buy at least one car back in three years.
� We supported a bathroom for the losmen at Numfor and the losmen in the Arfak mountains. The Numfor losmen is not finished yet, but coordination with the Arfak losmen is going well. We have send about 15 guests to the Arfak losmen in the last year.
� The Arfak paradise bird protection program will also be implemented in the Senopi district. Arrangements have been made for the Socialization of the Senopi district
� A new Losmen in Senopi has been raised and will be fully operational at the end of 2009. The building of the losmen is solely excecuted by Papuans.
� 35 guests have paid a visit to the project side in Senopi.
� There has been an agreement in Senopi village to protect the paradise birds in dedicated area’s. Two landowners are actively involved in the protection of the Lesser Bird of Paradise. They also receive income from tourists to compensate their loss when not hunting these birds. 9 Tourists have made a tour with these landowners.


Networking
� The SDSP has a mutual agreement with the Dinas Kesehatan
� The SDSP is working closely together with the Keuskupan Manokwari/Sorong
� The SDSP is working towards an MOU with the protestant LSM Mikatepmos
� The SDSP is about to sign an MOU with ILO
� The SDSP is working towards an MOU with Unicef. Unicef is also providing educational materials for our programs.
